KATHMANDU, DEC 05 -
The majestic panoramas of the Himalayas and the journey to destinations, breathtakingly stunning, have been the muse for photographers worldwide. Many would agree that to justly describe the beauty of our mountainous vistas in a few words requires a form as exquisite as the subject itself, much like the art of poetry. Combining these arts of photography and poetry in a single volume is the collection Nepal Trilogy.

Nepal Trilogy is a collection of photographs by German photographer Andreas Stimm and Nepali poet Yuyutsu RD Sharma, a compilation of their journeys through the region of Annapurna, Helambu and Everest. The 800 pages books include 600 black and white photographs taken by Stimm and 63 poems by Sharma. The book was launched on Dec 4 at the Nepal Tourism Board by chief guest Her Excellency, Ambassador of Federal Republic of Germany to Nepal Verena Grafin Von Roedern. The book has already been launched in four other cities internationally, London, Frankfurt, New York and Paris, and has finally been unveiled in Nepal. The compilation is a three-part series, each part on one of the mentioned areas and comprises of brief descriptions on the trip along with sketched maps and altitude profiles. The English poems have also been translated in German within the book.

In the event held on Sunday evening, the authors and the chief guest were joined by senior journalist Sarad Pradhan and Teru Mansfield, Professor of German at Bishwa Bhasa Campus. The hour long programme included readings from the book, in English as well as in the German translation. In the interaction programme that followed, authors revealed that the ensemble has been an effort spanning for a long time now. Stimm’s photographs have been assembled for nearly over ten years and the book also features a section on the making of this trilogy.

South Asia is linguistically rich but these languages remain largely insulated from each other. Each language has a unique way of viewing the world and they have their own stories to tell. To share these stories and maintain our linguistic vibrancy, these languages need to start speaking to each other and to the world at large. Can the English language bridge this divide? This session focuses on whether the English language is a useful tool in preserving these languages or whether it actually endangers them.

Yuyutsu Sharma is a poet and translator. He has written several collections of poetry, a travelogue, and translated and edited several anthologies of contemporary Nepali poetry into English. His publications include the book, Annapurnas & Stains of Blood: Life, Travel and Writing a Page of Snow and the poetry collections, Nepal Trilogy and Annapurna Poems.
